On the bank of the Air Itam river (Black Water River) in Penang, Suffolk House was built in 1805 on the site of Francis Light's sprawling pepper estate called Suffolk. Capt. Francis Light founded the British colony of Penang in 1786. The original Suffolk House which was Francis Light's residence was a simple timber and attap construction.
William Edward Philips who later became a governor of Penang constructed the mansion in the current Georgian style. Suffolk House was the residence of several early Governors of Penang including Gov. Bannerman. Suffolk House is open to the public for tours and social functions.
