Masjid Kapitan Keling, Penang

On the corner of Buckingham St and Masjid Kapitan Keling Rd (formerly Pitt St), this beautiful mosque with a finely-manicured lawn is testimony to the influence of the early Indian Muslim settlers to Penang. Keling is a Malay word for people of Indian origin. (Nowadays, many would consider this word as offensive.)

Built in 1801, it is one of the oldest mosques in Penang. It was founded by Cauder Mydin Merican, an Indian Muslim from Tamil Nadu, who was the leader or Kapitan of the Tamil Muslim community.

Little India of Geogetown is in the vicinity of the mosque.
