Perched above the sea in Weld Quay, clusters of wooden houses built on stilts stand the test of time and tide. Along each jetty, there was a row of houses joined by wooden walkways. This unique waterfront settlement catered to early Chinese migrants from the same family clan. Today there are 6 surviving clan jetties. The Chew jetty is one of the more lively and largest jetties. It is situated at the end of Gat Lebuh Armenian.
It was interesting to walk along the jetty to the end. Though many of the houses are still private residences, a number have been converted into shops selling touristy items, eating places and homestays. For the private homes, I suppose the owners must have gotten used to the tourists who walk pass their open doors everyday gawking and snapping shots. Talk about living in a fishbowl. A peep into their homes reveal a fascinating mix of modern conveniences within a 70s environment.
